Etnia registered association

Etnia is a registered association (NGO) that reports on the situation of indigenous peoples from around the world and aims to promote these peoples' possibilities of practising their own cultures and preserving their traditional lands.

The association was founded in 1989 and was originally called Uhanalaisten kansojen ja kulttuurien puolesta – Fjärde världen ry. (Pro Endangered Peoples and Cultures - Fourth World). The current name was adopted in 2004.

The association's means of reporting:

  • - The Ensimmäiset Kansat (First People) quarterly magazine, which is published by Etnia four times a year and deals with the indigenous peoples of the world from various aspects, their cultures and current situations.
  • - The Etnia Film Festival which focuses mainly on documentaries portraying the life and culture of indigenous peoples; the festival also presents feature films that are often not seen in Finnish cinemas.
  • - Lectures and national dialogue to help inform about and report on indigenous peoples. The association has organized for example a lecture on pygmy music, a discussion on Tibet and the 'Indigenous peoples and oil and uranium' tours.
  • - Taking part in events such as Mahdollisuuksien tori, MinorLinks and the Book Fair. The association has also helped present the art of indigenous peoples and took part in AEPF 2006.

Etnia's office is situated in Turku Cultural Centre (Uudenmaankatu 1).
