Etnia Film Festival 2009 will be held on the 8th to the 11th of October in
the heart of Turku. The festival theatre is situated at Humalistonkatu 7,
and is an old theatre called ML Media Liv Ab.
The festival presents documentaries and feature films, which deal with the
past and the present of Latin America, but especially with how the
indigenous people of the continents cope in the modernised world. A special
insider’s view will be presented through a representative of Promedios
(Mexico). Several documentaries will be screened that deal with different
issues of Central America.
Young film makers from Sweden are presenting a film, that deals with
businesses between a Swedish and a Chilean company. The background story is
that in the 80’s the laws in Sweden became more strict, and the Swedish
company got an opportunity to take loads of waste to Chile to be processed
and dumped into the secure soil. The result can be seen in Toxic Playground
by William Johansson and Lars Edman.
Most of the films are subtitled in English, but some are subtitled in
Finnish or unsubtitled.
